KNOW YOUR CHARACTER

The rules behind the folio.

Folio D20 is an independent tool based on the 2024 Player’s Handbook. Explanations are original concise play aids. When an interaction depends on a circumstance at the table, consult the book and your Dungeon Master.

The current catalogue

Calculations and choices

The builder calculates ability modifiers, Hit Points, Armor Class, saving throws, skills, proficiency, weapon attacks, spell slots and listed resources. Class order matters for multiclass characters. Spell grants retain their source and casting ability.

Customize → Feats shows the complete 75-feat catalogue, Fighting Styles and Ability Score Improvement. Prerequisites are checked at the level each choice was acquired, before its own increase. Background feat substitutions are labeled DM adjustments; custom copies are labeled Homebrew. An incompatible imported choice stays available for correction.

Conditional combat effects, transformations, temporary buffs, feature activation and effects described as manual are not continuously simulated. They are recorded as instructions on the character’s folio. Review the notes when customizing; an incomplete or incompatible selection is marked for attention.

2024 rules, 5.5e and errata

D&D Beyond now also uses the name “5.5e” for the revised 2024 rules. This changes the label, not the edition used by this tool. The local catalogue is versioned separately from your JSON document. Official naming explanation.

The reference book is checked against official errata. The local development verification report records which numerical behaviors were tested. Catalogue inclusion alone does not certify every possible interaction.

Your own rules

Custom definitions and numerical adjustments are identified as Homebrew, included in your JSON and kept separate from the published catalogue. Their descriptions remain your responsibility. An active custom spell does not automatically simulate a spell’s temporary effects.

Starting at a higher level

Your standard class and background equipment stays the same. The PHB 2024 starting equipment guidance (p. 43) adds gold and magic items according to your total starting level, subject to your DM’s approval. No extra gold is spent automatically. Equipment customization shows the saved die, allowance, possessions and Attunement. Changing level keeps your belongings; use the explicit allowance review if you are rebuilding at a new starting level.

English and French

Both languages use the same rules and character document. The official French SRD 5.2.1 supplies French terminology. AideDD’s 2024 references cover names absent from the SRD; the 2024 community feature compendium supplements incomplete subclass references. Community names are distinguished from official publications in the verification glossary. French summaries are original play aids, not a verbatim French PHB. Language changes preserve personal text, pending choices and JSON.
