YOUR CHARACTER, YOUR FILE

Keep the character.

Folio D20 holds your character in the current browser tab. It does not automatically save a copy. Export a JSON file before refreshing or closing the page, then import that file when you want to continue editing.

Export the editable character

After generating or customizing a character, choose Export JSON. Your browser downloads a file whose name ends in .folio.json. Keep it somewhere you can find again. After later edits, export another copy and give the files clear names so you know which one is current.

The file records your character’s selections, progression and any custom definitions. Calculated values are reconstructed by the builder from those choices. It also identifies the document format, ruleset and catalogue versions.

Import and continue editing

Open the character builder, choose Import character in the header, and select your exported JSON file. If a character is already open, the application asks before replacing it. Export the current one first if you want to keep both.

A successful import recalculates the character. Review any rules notes, open Customize, make your changes, then export an updated file. Import reads the file locally in your browser; it does not upload the character to an account or server.

JSON and PDF serve different purposes

JSON is the file the builder can reopen. A PDF is a readable print copy created through the browser’s print dialog. Keep JSON for later changes; use Print sheet for a paper or PDF folio. The importer accepts this application’s character format; it does not convert other services’ character files or PDF sheets.

If the file cannot be imported

The builder checks the file’s structure, content references and versions. The import limit is 1 MiB. A malformed file, unsupported format version or unavailable ruleset or catalogue is rejected with an explanation instead of silently changing the character.

Keep the original file if an import fails. Check that you selected the character JSON rather than its PDF copy, and read the message before changing anything. There is currently no migration for arbitrary formats or catalogues. Version 1 files from the original catalogue are explicitly upgraded to version 2, keeping their possessions and gold without adding a higher-level starting allowance. Other unsupported versions are rejected. A rejected import leaves the character already open in the tab in place.
