Start with a character.
Learn as you play.
You do not need to make every rules decision before meeting your adventurer. Folio D20 starts with a recommended character, then lets you change its details. For a first session or a one-shot, ask your Dungeon Master which level and character options the group is using.
1. Pick a class and the starting level
Choose a class in the character builder, select your level, and choose Generate character. Level 1 offers the smallest set of features to learn. Use your group’s actual starting level if it is higher.
A Fighter gives you weapons, armor and a straightforward starting turn. A Rogue emphasizes skills and finding an opening. A Cleric brings divine spells and support. Choose the idea you want to play; the class pages explain the different approaches.
2. Read the first things you will use
Look at your Armor Class, Hit Points, Speed, saving throws and skills. Find your weapon or damaging cantrip in Attacks & damage. An attack bonus goes on an attack roll; a spell that lists a saving throw asks the target to roll against your spell save DC instead.
Your feature and spell references explain the available actions, resources and recovery rules in concise form. Conditional effects remain instructions to use at the table. Ask your Dungeon Master when a situation needs interpretation.
3. Make a few choices your own
Open Customize. Identity contains your name, species and background; Abilities shows where the numbers come from. Features contains class decisions, feats and their individual choices. Spells lets a spellcaster select spells for each casting source. Review any issues and rules notes after making changes.
You can leave the recommended choices in place and only change a name and backstory. For a first character, understanding a handful of useful options is more helpful than choosing a complicated combination you have not had time to read.
4. Bring the character to the table
Choose Export JSON before closing or refreshing the page. This file lets you reopen and edit the character later. Then choose a paper size and Print sheet. You can also save a PDF through the browser’s print dialog.
